Arts

Making art - on the stage or in the studio -- is a powerful way of finding out about yourself and the world. Art is fascinating and exhilarating - and it is an integral part of your education at Dana Hall.

Shaping your world

You may already see yourself as an artist, an actress, a musician, a dancer. Or you may be perfectly certain that you cannot draw or act or sing or dance. Whatever your past experience, our accomplished faculty will build your confidence and introduce you to ideas, materials and perspectives you have never explored before.

In the Middle School

Our Middle School program offers a structured introduction to the visual and performing arts, from drawing and painting to choral singing, acting and dance. In eighth grade, you choose from an array of electives, including music composition, theater history, ceramics and the study of women in the arts. If you play an instrument, we encourage you to join our Chamber Ensemble or even a rock band as well.

In the Upper School

Through our extensive Upper School arts curriculum, you can gain the training and experience to develop a significant portfolio. Our offerings include classic studio art experiences like painting and ceramics as well as less expected options, like architecture and design. Performing arts courses include instrumental music, vocal music, theatre and dance. We also offer advanced classes in art history, songwriting and technical theater.

The school year provides many chances for you to share your creative work with the community. If you're musically inclined, for instance, you may choose to join Dana Hall's chorus, gospel choir and chamber singers or play with our chamber music, flute, or jazz ensembles. And for inspiration and entertainment, we make the most of Boston's outstanding museums, galleries, theatres and concerts.

Dance

Ballet. Jazz. Tap. Modern dance - even advanced hip-hop. At Dana Hall, you can choose from a challenging selection of dance classes, whether you're new to the field or have been dancing since you could walk. (Classes count either for Athletics/Fitness credit, or Performing Arts credit.) If you're interested in choreography and performance, you can join our student-led Dance Theater Workshop, where you will have the opportunity to choreograph and teach a dance routine.
