Additional Tips

Tips for all potential college athletes:

  • Prepare an Athletic Resume which includes your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Indicate your sport, position, statistics on times, goals scored, assists, etc. and your years of experience playing on the Varsity and Junior Varsity level. Include all of your high school sports along with your summer sports camp or local (non-school) league experience. Mention any awards or honors you have received.
  • Write a Letter of Introduction to the coach introducing yourself (you can use same letter for each school – just change the coach’s name and school). Include your full name, address, grade, sport played, position, etc. In addition, indicate if you have visited the school or how you have become familiar with the school and the athletic program. Indicate your interest in the school and your wish to have information about the team. Provide information on your academic profile as well (grades and scores). You should e-mail or mail this letter to the coach directly.
  • Some coaches may request or require a DVD or video of your play, featuring your skills. Find out as not every coach wants video. Your current coach(es) may have advice on developing an appropriate video.
  • Learn the rules about recruitment –there are specific guidelines about how often, and when, coaches can contact you, and they vary by divisions. There is a helpful summary here: http://www.fastweb.com/fastweb/resources/articles/index/101262.
