Placing Emphasis on the STEM Areas |
|
The STEM for Girls Think Tank is an annual gathering of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) educational leaders from National Coalition of Girls Schools (NCGS) schools and interested universities from around the world. Math teacher Steve Kunec, Science teacher Meera Shah, and Director of Academic Technology Marci Van Inwagen attended the second annual STEM Conference at Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, Tenn. The purpose of the conference was to find ways to better prepare and encourage young women to study STEM areas with the long-range goal to have more young women pursue careers in these fields. Teachers and administrators shared best practices, brainstormed ideas, and planned for future STEM-related initiatives and collaborations. Speakers included Dr. Catherine Didion, the Senior Program Director at the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and an internationally recognized leader and expert on issues of equity and gender in science and engineering, Dr. Lisa Damour, the co-director of Laurel School’s Center for Research on Girls, and Dr. Stacy Klein, a bio-medical engineer from Vanderbilt University who focused on the "Legacy Cycle" method of teaching science.
As a result of their discussions at the conference, Dr. Kunec and Ms. Shah have suggested creating more joint Math/Science department meetings to integrate subject areas and create a common vocabulary. They have also suggested engaging girls through exposure to STEM topics in school meetings and activities particularly, at times, using young, recent grads that are in college studying STEM fields.
