| 131st Academic Year Begins |
|
Dana Hall began its 131st academic year on Tuesday, August 30 with Opening Convocation. Students and faculty gathered in Bardwell Auditorium where Head of School Caroline Erisman greeted new and returning members of the Dana community. Erisman summarized the book Charlotte’s Web and connected the lessons learned from the story with her hopes for the community in the new school year. Erisman encouraged everyone to stand up for what they think is right or just, offer to be a friend, be loyal to your friends, and solve problems creatively. All-School Co-Presidents C. Lyons ’12 and C. Pina ’12, as well as Middle School Co-Presidents S. Galligan ’16 and M. Sullivan ’16, also welcomed everyone. Pina explained that no matter how long the students have been apart, it will be easy to rekindle old friendships and make new ones. “Dana Hall students are not just peers; they are sisters,” said Pina. Lyons added that Dana Hall “offers the tools for each student to become a super woman.” Lyons and Pina also spoke about the theme of the school year: “We are all stars.” The Co-Presidents explained how all of the stars of Dana Hall create a constellation, and that there is always room to add new stars. Every month they will present a new challenge to the community based on this theme. In September, they are challenging students to shoot for the next galaxy. Students and faculty sang the Opening Convocation song written by Director of Choral Music David Coleman. After closing remarks by V. Robichaud ’12, who shared her experience as a High School Mentor at Dana’s Girls Summer Leadership Program, the assembly came to a close with the Alma Mater. The remainder of Dana Hall’s first week included classes, first Step Sing of the year, class retreats and the traditional Harbor Cruise. Dana Hall opens the year with 475 students (136 boarding students, 219 Upper School day students, and 120 Middle School students) who represent 15 countries and 15 states.   |
