Before Thanksgiving, Students Offer Thanks and Service |
Dana Hall's annual Thanksgiving Convocation provided students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to gather together to reflect on the importance of giving thanks. Before the community departed for the holiday break, students shared thoughts, quotes, stories and songs of Thanksgiving.
The junior class co-presidents presented the Dana community with an interesting question. With 86,400 seconds in a day, how will you spend your seconds?
In the spirit of giving, students shared some of their seconds to help families in need this holiday. Dana Hall teamed up with Union United Methodist Church to provide families with food for a hearty Thanksgiving dinner. Each advisor group was assigned a family ranging in size depending on the number of students in the advisor group. Each group was given one big box to festively decorate and fill with all the fixings for a delicious dinner: stuffing, rolls, cranberry sauce, apple cider, etc. In total, 88 families will receive boxes.
At the convocation, the two co-heads of the Community Service Advisory Board presented Rev. Martin D. McLee and Ms. Mona Scantlebury of the Union United Methodist Church with the boxes and a check for $650. The money raised through the sale of turkey tickets will be used to purchase turkeys for the families.
Rev. McLee offered the words "thank you" in several languages to emphasize that Thanksgiving is a time for every one, no matter his or her home country or culture, to celebrate and give thanks.
