Dana Collects Food, Raises Money

In collaboration with the Union United Methodist Church in Boston, Dana Hall will help feed about 100 families during the Thanksgiving holiday. Advisor groups each decorated a cardboard box called a "Turkey Box," which they filled with food they collected for an assigned family. The filled boxes were delivered to the church on Tuesday, November 24 following Dana's annual Thanksgiving Convocation. In addition to filling the boxes, students bought raffle tickets to raise money to buy turkeys for all of the families.turkey_box1.jpg

At Convocation, Head of School Caroline Erisman read remarks from a 1976 speech given by former Academic Dean Dorothy Farmer. An excerpt from the speech, retold by Erisman, said that the Dana community should all be thankful "for our school, who we are, what we can do and the glorious possibilities of tomorrow."

Co-Head of the Community Service Advisory Board (CAB) L. Mailer-Howat '10 reminded the Dana community of CSAB's theme for the year: pay it forward. Representatives from each class then spoke Dana students and faculty about what Thanksgiving means to them. Some read poems they wrote or had been inspired by, while others talked about their reasons to be thankful. Eight grade Class Co-Presidents E. Martin '14 and S. Wasniewski '14 conducted research in the Dana Archives and described some historical Dana Thanksgiving traditions, while Senior Class Co-Presidents C. Haughey '10 and C. Schneier '10 thanked the dedicated teachers of Dana Hall. "It is one thing to have a teacher who believes in you," said Haughey. "It is another to have a teacher that makes you believe in yourself."

After a song from Director of Choral Music David Coleman and the Gospel Choir, CSAB presented representatives from the United Union Methodist Church with a check for $550 to provide turkeys for the families from the church.
