Student Artists Advance to National Competition

Seven Dana Hall artists were honored on Sunday, February 10 at the 2008 Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards at John Hancock Hall in Boston. With 3,487 individual entries submitted by students from 376 schools, judges selected just over 900 winners for the Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention awards.

The size of a school determined how many submissions a school could send. Dana Hall was allowed to enter seven individual works; all seven received an award.

There were 342 Gold Key awards presented and 573 Silver Key awards. H. Cabot ’09 earned a Gold Key for photography in the black and white film category, G. Wong-Alvarez ’08 also earned a Gold Key for photography in the digital imaging category; R. Wong ’08 earned a Gold Key for painting; and S. Remsen ’08 earned a Gold Key for drawing. A. Kafil ’10 earned a Silver Key for photography in the black and white film category; N. Wan ’09 earned a Silver Key for drawing; and K. Nathan ’12 earned a Silver Key for drawing. Gold Key recipients go on to compete for Gold and Silver awards at the national competition in New York in May.

College-bound high school seniors were invited to submit art and photography portfolios, including eight images of their artwork. Judges chose 192 of the 622 entries for the national competition. Dana Hall submitted eight portfolios for review; J. Anderson ’08, T. Barrett ’08 and E. Schwartz ’08 were selected to go on to the national competition.

The winning pieces are on display in an exhibit at the Massachusetts State Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza through Feb. 22. The exhibit is free and open to the public weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from noon to 5 p.m.
