Middle School Celebrates Culture Day

On Monday, November 23 the Dana Hall Middle School celebrated Culture Day. Culture Day is the Middle School's first interdisciplinary day, which teaches one unit across all subjects. Students will attend regular classes all lessons concentrating on different cultures of the world. culture_day.jpg

Mark Stanek, writer of the Middle School Handbook for the National Association for Independent Schools (NAIS), spent a day at the Middle School last year and introduced the faculty to "Focus Friday." The idea of "Focus Friday" is not to create extra projects or work, but instead weave a topic into a regular school day that will supplement and complement the curriculum.

"We are using this day as a platform to talk about our own culture and compare it to others we can learn more about," said Spanish teacher Jamie Burgoyne. "Culture Day helps the girls explore the idea that language has a culture, life-style, traditions, and set of experiences that bring it to life, and which may in fact be very different from their own."

Throughout the day students performed skits, listened to guest speakers and dressed to represent another county. Special events included chariot races, a language trivia game, and a showcase of teachers' international travels.
