Model UN Earns Highest Honors in Local Competition

On Saturday, March 22, seven members of the Dana Hall Model UN team participated in the Concord Academy Model United National Conference. Competing against local schools including Deerfield Academy, Worcester Academy, Shrewsbury High School, Burlington High School and Cambridge School of Weston, Dana Hall walked away with a win. The Model UN team is two for two in competition this year.

Dana Hall’s L. Fisher ’09, representing Libya in the Security Council Committee, had the resolution she wrote passed with nearly unanimous support, a particularly impressive accomplishment, as she was scheduled to take part in another committee and was switched last minute. Having done no research on the room's topics, she came out on top.

In the General Assembly round of competition Dana Hall’s newest members, A. Onatunde ’11, Z. Stanley-Lockman ’10, M. Kelly ’11, A. Spiliakos ’11 and J. Isaacs ’11, gave a standout performance. “The students gained experience speaking publically, working on resolutions with students from other schools, and developing their talents at the fine art of bargaining and negotiating; debating and discussing; and persuading and dissuading,” said Model UN faculty advisor Heather Panahi.

Dana Hall’s Model UN co-leader C. Blakelock ’10 earned the highest honors of the day, defeating 53 students to take home the award for Best Delegate in the General Assembly for her portrayal of Iran.

The Model UN’s next competiton will take place on April 25 and 26.
