What's black and white and read all over? That phrase accurately describes the new installation at the Dana Hall Art Gallery. "No Pictures Please" opened the last week of November with the four walls of the Gallery completely covered in white paper and a single message: "No pictures please."
The blank canvas was filled in less than two days with words, drawings, letters, stencils, poems, foreign characters, and doodles drawn with black and red markers. Michael Frassinelli, co-director of the Art Gallery, was shocked with how fast the walls were filled. He is planning to add more white papers to the floor and ceiling to encourage more people to add to the exhibit.
"As a culture, we are so locked into language with things like texting and even doodling," Frassinelli said. "This is a way to give everyone a chance to be creative."
Creativity is flowing from every direction into the Gallery. Students from art, English, and foreign language classes have stopped in to add their own personal touch to the walls. There also have been other visitors adding to the installation, such as children from community schools, parents, and teachers.
"We have tried to loosen up the idea of fine art," Frassinelli explained, noting that you don't have to be an artist to contribute. "Any visitor is invited to add to the exhibit."
"No Pictures Please" will run through December 19.
