Riding Center Hosts Therapeutic Riding Show

The Dana Hall Riding Center will hold its first Therapeutic Riding Program Horse Show on Saturday, December 6 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.  Approximately 18 students will participate in the show, which will give students the opportunity to showcase the skills they have mastered during their lessons.  Riding Center Director Sarah Summers '98 said that the show, “Promises to be an exciting exhibition of the children’s hard work."

Since August 2005, students of all ages with disabilities ranging from poor motor skills to slow verbal development have participated in the Therapeutic Riding Program at Dana Hall.  This innovative program allows children with disabilities to enjoy the experience and therapeutic value of riding, while providing an opportunity to the students at Dana Hall to connect with this special group of individuals and share with them their love of horses. Dana students help out at the weekly lessons as well as at the horse shows.  The program is run by Terry Snow of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.

Students will ride in a variety of classes including walk/trot over poles, Follow the Leader, obstacle courses, walk/trot Simon Says and Red Light Green Light.  One student will perform a ride set to her own music.  Dana Hall students will be assist riders as leaders and sidewalkers, as well as organize a costume parade for children.  The event is open to the public and is free of charge.
