Riders Going to Nationals

26 students from Dana Hall School's Upper and Middle School Equestrian teams competed in Regional Finals at Volo Farm in Westford, Mass. Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5.

After the weekend competition, the Upper School team earned the title of 2009 Region 2 Champions, and 13 riders moved on to the Zone Finals which were held Monday, April 6. A. Altman '11, A. Bertelson'13, A. Corless '13, G. Dobbin '11, M. Gordon '11, J. Johnson '12, A. Joyce '11, E. Kenny '12, S. Kinch '11, C. Lorusso '09, K.Stento '11, A. Suitor '12 and S. Taft '14 competed in the Zone finals.

In addition to their success over the weekend, eight students have qualified for Nationals in Painesville, Ohio Thursday, 2009_regionals.jpgApril 30- Sunday, May 3. A. Johnson '12 - JV Beginner on the Flat, A. Joyce '11 - Varsity Open Over Fences 2'6" & Varsity Open on the Flat, A. Suitor '12 - JV Beginner on the Flat and S. Taft '14 - Future Novice on the Flat.

"I am very proud of all the girls on the team for riding so well and showing such fabulous team spirit throughout the whole IEA season," said Riding Center Director Sarah Summers '98. "I am excited for the girls who will be competing at Nationals and I know they will represent Dana Hall well."

Riding Center Hosts Therapeutic Riding Show

The Dana Hall Riding Center will hold its first Therapeutic Riding Program Horse Show on Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Approximately 18 students will participate in the show, which will give students the opportunity to showcase the skills they have mastered during their lessons. Riding Center Director Sarah Summers '98 said that the show, "Promises to be an exciting exhibition of the children's hard work."

Since August 2005, students of all ages with disabilities ranging from poor motor skills to slow verbal development have participated in the Therapeutic Riding Program at Dana Hall. This innovative program allows children with disabilities to enjoy the experience and therapeutic value of riding, while providing an opportunity to the students at Dana Hall to connect with this special group of individuals and share with them their love of horses. Dana students help out at the weekly lessons as well as at the horse shows. The program is run by Terry Snow of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.

Students will ride in a variety of classes including walk/trot over poles, Follow the Leader, obstacle courses, walk/trot Simon Says and Red Light Green Light. One student will perform a ride set to her own music. Dana Hall students will be assist riders as leaders and sidewalkers, as well as organize a costume parade for children. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.

Equestrian Team Takes First

Dana Hall School's Upper and Middle School Equestrian teams placed first at the Volo Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Horse Show on Sunday, November 16, 2008. The win qualifies the teams to compete in the Regional Finals in Spring 2009. "After a long and chilly weekend, our riders' hard work paid off with this big win," said Riding Center Director Sarah Summers '98.

team_champions_at_volo_farm.jpgIn addition to team success, eight students also had individual achievements. A. Bertelson '13, H. McCall '14, M. Prescott '10, C. Kenny '15, S. Manoogian '14, S. Taft '14, A. Altman '11, and J. Johnson '12 all qualified for Regionals in their individual division.

Riding Center Makes Front Page News

The July 31, 2008 edition of The Wellesley Townsman featured a front page story on the Dana Hall Riding Center's Summer Horsemanship Camp.
