For more than 50 years, Dana Hall School of Music (DHSoM) has been providing high quality music instruction to the greater Boston community. DHSoM offers programs for music enthusiasts and musicians of all ages and backgrounds through private study, performance, ensembles, group classes and workshops. Our faculty members are professionally trained, highly experienced and dedicated to nurturing students at every level.

Dana Hall School of Music offers two 16-week semesters (fall and spring). Summer lessons and workshops are also available. Registration is on-going and students are placed on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to registar

To registar for individual music lessons, please return your registration form by fax, e-mail or mail.

Lesson Calendar

Please view the School of Music Spring 2012 Lesson Calendar for specific lesson dates, holidays and designated make-up days. The lesson calendar is designed to accomodate both public and private school breaks with some exceptions.

Make Up

Instructor cancellations will always be made up by the instructor and each semester ends with designated make-up days. In addition, mid-session make-up lessons may also occur but are entirely dependent upon mutual availability of the instructor and the student. Please note that instructors are NOT obligated to make up student absences for any reason. However, if given sufficient notice, an instructor will often make a good faith effort to make-up missed lessons.

Tuition Information

The cost of tuition for one full semester per student is $685 for 30 minute lessons; $995 for 45-minute lessons; $1,200 for 60 minute lessons. Registration(s) received after the start of the semester are pro-rated based on the start date through the end of the term. A 10% tuition discount is offered for second and subsequent family registrations. Students (child or adult) registered for private lessons also receive a 20% discount for group classes, ensembles and workshops offered by DHSoM.

Adult Lesson Option

We know adults are very busy so we offer a Flex Pass option to our adult students. This option allows an adult student to purchase eight (8) lessons for $560 to be used at any point in the year. Lessons do not have to be consecutive but lesson schedules are made at the mutual agreement of the student and instructor.

Sing, Act, Learn-children's voice class for (ages 6-8)

This children's voice class is a great way to learn about singing and music in a group setting. The class will introduce your child to the fun of singing and acting with a little dance movement too! Students will work together to create a music show based on a familiar story using songs, movement and other music accompaniment. The semester will culminate in a performance of this "mini-musical" that the students create together.

Tuesdays at 5 p.m. (45 minute class)
Tuition: $350 (no registration fee required)

Young Musician Chamber Music Competition

Audition Date: Sunday, January 29
Winners Performance: Sunday, April 1 at 3pm

The Dana Hall School of Music is proud to announce the first annual Young Musicians Chamber Music Competition. The competition is open to young instrumentalists (piano, strings including harp, woodwind and brass). There are two divisions of competition: Division 1, grades 3-8 and Division 2, grades 9 - 12.

The Young Musicians Chamber Music Competition is designed to encourage young musicians to explore chamber music and all of its possibilities. It is the cornerstone of Dana Hall School of Music’s chamber music initiative. In partnership with our new artist-in-residence, the Arneis Quartet, we are creating an integrated chamber music program that will include chamber music workshops, opportunities for weekly coaching, performances and educational outreach.

The competition provides the winning musicians the opportunity to perform with the Arneis Quartet. Working side-by-side with these accomplished professional musicians, winners will experience a unique collaboration. Chamber music engages each individual musician in a close musical dialogue with one another. At the heart of the chamber music experience is developing a collective musical instinct, experience, knowledge and talent that guides the process of interpreting, rehearsing, and performing.

The winner of each Division will perform with The Arneis Quartet on Sunday, April 1, 2012 in Dana Hall’s beautiful Beveridge Hall. The concert will be the culmination of a chamber music weekend from Thursday, March 29 through Sunday April 1. The application deadline was January 15.
