study_abroad School-Year Abroad (China, France, Italy and Spain)

School Year Abroad (SYA) is a yearlong program recognized by Dana Hall for the valuable educational experience it provides its students. Students may study abroad in one of the following countries: China, France, Italy, and Spain. Students live with a host family and attend classes for the academic year. Students interested in applying to the SYA program should contact the Director of the Upper School.

High Mountain Institute -- Colorado

Dana Hall is a member school of the Rocky Mountain Semester at the High Mountain Institute (HMI) in Leadville, Colorado. The semester-long program is committed to the idea of "simple in means, rich in ends." Students live and study on the rustic HMI campus and participate in its upkeep. Juniors who are interested in an apprenticeship in nature are encouraged to apply to the Rocky Mountain Semester for either a fall or spring term. Two students are selected each year.

Australian Exchange, Ruyton Girls' School

Beginning in 1992, Dana Hall has participated in an exchange program with Ruyton Girls' School in Victoria, Australia. Every year Dana Hall hosts two Ruyton girls in the fall, and in the summer two Dana students attend Ruyton and stay with Australian host families. Each visit is approximately six weeks in length. This unique opportunity to travel and study in another culture is open primarily to ninth graders.

Australian Exchange, St. Mary's Anglican Girls' School

In the fall of 2003, Dana Hall began participating in an exchange program with St. Mary's School in Perth, Australia. Students apply for this program in their 9th or 10th grade year and attend St. Mary's from early summer until the third week in August of that year. The Dana Hall student will then host a St. Mary's student on weekends for the first trimester. Both the St. Mary's student and the Dana Hall student will be boarders at their visiting schools. One student will be selected each year.

In addition, the Language Department provides information and assists students in making appropriate choices for off-campus enrichment in learning a foreign language. There are many opportunities for linguistic and cultural enrichment in other cultures and countries through valuable study tours; possibilities for home-stays; exchanges; biking, hiking, or sailing adventures; and volunteer work programs, as well as traditional intensive language courses throughout the U.S. and the world.
