Activities

Aquatic Activities

Lower Camp will enjoy swim lessons with certified Swim America swim instructors as a lead up to introductory snorkeling. All Lower Camp campers will be tested and grouped by skill level. The Upper Camp will learn introductory scuba and snorkeling from East Coast Divers, Inc. This is not a certification course. All scuba and snorkeling equipment will be provided by East Coast Divers. Lessons include mask clearing, air sharing techniques, regulator and tank usage, diving theory, entry and exit exercises, kicking methods, rescue and emergency procedures, and general safety skills.

activities2Fencing

Fencing is the Olympic sport of sword fighting – think Pirates of the Caribbean, but more civilized. Fencers must be skilled in bladework, footwork, tactics and strategy, as bouts are characterized by flurries of speed, highly aerobic movement, and lightning-fast blade movements. The Lower Camp will learn basic lead-up skills and exercises, practice hand-eye coordination, train in movement, and apply safety measures. The Upper Camp will continue on to more advanced skills and use these skills to compete in inter-camp matches. There will be one camp-wide fencing tournament per session.

Rock Climbing

Climbing can be an exhilarating activity, full of physical and mental challenges. All campers will learn basic rock wall climbing, including rope handling and knot tying skills. Through the course of instruction, campers will complete team-building exercises, acquire leadership skills, and learn about safety and risk management. The Upper Camp campers will have the option of going on weekly off-site climbs each camp session.

activities44Creative Arts

New in 2010, Creative Arts is a set of activities designed to allow campers to express their originality! All campers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, which may include dance, performing arts and arts and crafts. Activities will be tailored to age group, skill level and camper interests. This addition is an exciting component designed to compliment other camp activities.

Golf

We all know that many professional golfers started swinging golf clubs at a young age. Campers will learn the basics of golf – how to putt, pitch and drive. The mornings will be spent in our indoor driving range, located in the expansive Shipley Center gymnasium. In the afternoon, the Upper Camp will head to area golf courses to practice at the driving range, pitching area and putting green. Once a week, campers will play a round of golf at a local course. Fore!

activities5Sports and Games

Healthy living starts with good fitness habits and a clear understanding of the benefits of all types of physical fitness activities. The Upper Camp will receive introductory instruction to fitness as well as more advanced physical activity and exercises that can be applied to a variety of sports. In addition, while the Upper Camp is introduced to an expansive variety of plyometric, agility, flexibility, and core training activities, younger Lower Camp campers will experience the fundamentals of fitness through engaging games and activities. Campers will have the opportunity to play a variety of outdoor and indoor games to foster creative thinking, problem resolution, self-esteem and teamwork—and of course to have fun! The instructor works closely with all campers to ensure age appropriate training and the safe usage of all equipment and exercises. All games will be broken up into age appropriate groups.
