Fencing
Fencing is the Olympic sport of sword fighting – think Pirates of the Caribbean, but more civilized. Fencers must be skilled in bladework, footwork, tactics and strategy, as bouts are characterized by flurries of speed, highly aerobic movement, and lightning-fast blade movements. Campers will learn basic leadup skills and exercises, practice hand-eye coordination, train in movement, and apply safety measures. The Shipley Center’s 3,050-square foot fencing studio is equipped with six built-in fencing strips, allowing for simultaneous competitions. A cushioned shock-absorbent maple athletic floor and wall mirrors serve as invaluable tools to the fencers when practicing their movements, positions, and postures. There will be one camp-wide fencing tournament per session.
Fitness
Healthy living starts with good fitness habits and a clear understanding of the benefits of all types of physical fitness activities. Campers receive instruction on proper use of cardiovascular and weight training machines. The fitness instructor works closely with all campers to ensure ageappropriate training and the safe usage of all equipment. In addition, campers are introduced to an expansive variety of plyometric, agility, flexibility, and core training activities. Dana Hall’s Fitness Center features state-of-the-art LifeTime Fitness equipment. The room is fitted with a sports-impact floor for a safe workout. A three-lane suspended indoor track provides additional space for activities.
Golf
We all know Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie started swinging golf clubs at a young age. Campers will learn the basics of golf – how to putt, pitch and drive. The mornings will be spent in our indoor driving range, located in the expansive Shipley Center gymnasium. In the afternoons, the golf program will head to area golf courses to practice at the driving range, pitching area and putting green. Once a week, campers will play a round of golf at a local course. Fore!
Leadership Initiatives
What would summer camp be without Capture-the-Flag? Campers will have the opportunity to play a variety of outdoor and indoor games to foster creative thinking, problem resolution, self-esteem and teamwork—and of course to have fun! The Shipley Center’s gymnasium features an advanced flooring system and two NCAA regulation-size basketball courts, and Dana Hall’s campus includes two soccer fields, one field hockey/lacrosse field and one softball diamond.
Rock Climbing
Climbing can be an exhilarating activity, full of physical and mental challenges. Campers will learn basic rock wall climbing, including rope handling and knot tying skills. The Shipley Center boasts an impressive 465-square foot customdesigned climbing wall that is 34-feet high. The wall has different sized hand holds to allow for variant climbing styles and skills. Through the course of instruction, campers will complete team-building exercises, acquire leadership skills, and learn about safety and risk management. There will be two off-site climbs each camp session.
Scuba and Snorkeling
Campers will learn introductory scuba and snorkeling from East Coast Divers, Inc. instructors. This is not a certification course. All equipment will be provided by East Coast Divers. Lessons include mask clearing, air sharing techniques, regulator and tank usage, diving theory, entry and exit exercises, kicking methods, rescue and emergency procedures, and general safety skills. The Shipley Center’s 6,589-square foot Aquatic Center features a stunning 25-yard, six-lane pool designed for recreational and competitive swimming. Each camp session will include an excursion to Cape Cod for an afternoon of snorkeling.
