Creating a Third Space for Boarders

Creating a Third Space for Boarders

The Johnstons Patio — the outdoor space between Johnston A, B, C and D dormitories — which was once a walk-through space on the way to the dorms is now refreshed and revitalized, thanks to the Student Affairs Office (SAO). Dean of Residential Life and International Student Advisor Donna Corrigan P07 and Upper School Dean of Students Wendy Skinner reimagined the space together, wanting to create an additional gathering spot for the students who live on campus.

“In boarding, we’re thinking about ‘third spaces:’ spaces that are not home and not work,” Skinner said. “Your third place is where you relax in public, where you encounter familiar faces and make new acquaintances. We wanted a place where boarding students in particular can connect and relax, and the Johnstons Patio seemed a good place to start.”

The space now houses Adirondack chairs, rugs and a fire pit, and recently hosted s’mores making. The landscaping was also brightened up with a variety of flowers and flowering plants, planted by Buildings & Grounds and SAO.

“I found myself sitting there with friends on a sunny day,” said Johnston A Proctor C. Petrulis ’27. “It was so nice to hang out, and when students walked by on their way to their dorms, many stopped by to chat, too! I am excited to see how this space promotes more face-to-face connections between different Johnstons dorms.”
