Global Scholars Taste the World

Earlier in November, students enrolled in the Global Scholars Senior Capstone course traveled to Brookline, Mass., to sample some Turkish cuisine. The Senior Capstone is the last required course in students’ pursuit of Dana Hall’s Global Scholars Certificate, which recognizes and celebrates students who seek to “broaden [their] understanding about the people and cultures of the world through varied coursework, international experiences and language study.”

As part of this initiative, students must participate in at least 12 immersive cultural activities over the course of their high school career. This activity, which was organized by Capstone teacher Heather Panahi, introduced students to the history and flavors of Turkish food. After sampling several traditional dishes, participants ended the afternoon with Turkish coffee and a little “divination offering” by classmate C. Tunca ’22, who taught her peers how to read coffee grounds to tell one’s fortune.
