Showcasing the Talents of Our Community

A group of current parents and parents of alumnae will have pieces on display in the Dana Hall Art Gallery as part of the upcoming Parent Art Show, running October 15-November 14, including during Family Weekend. This show will feature works from Anne Harney P08 (painting), Riseon Kim P30 (painting), Betsy Miller P27, 29 (ceramics) and Heather Simmons P25 (ceramics).

“Since its founding in 1975, the Dana Hall Art Gallery has a long history of showing the work of our talented parents, and this year’s show is no exception,” said Michael Frassinelli, Visual Arts Department Head. “It is always great to see another side of members of our community. Some from this group of artists have been painting or doing ceramics for many years, and for some, it has been a more recent passion.”

Miller has been creating art since her early days. “I took ceramics in college, but really fell in love with pottery in New York working at a studio in Hell’s Kitchen,” she said. “Now, I throw and handbuild from a home studio in our basement with a wheel and kiln. I love learning about other artists and seeing their work.”

Kim has also been making art her whole life. "While my career led me to computer art and animation for video games, the act of making art has been a constant, driving force in my life," she said. "After a decade working in 3D animation, I'm now actively focusing on my passion for non-digital art, particularly painting. While it's currently a fulfilling hobby, I plan to dedicate significantly more time to developing my painting practice in the near future."

Harney didn’t begin painting until her daughter was applying to colleges. “I decided to sign up for an Intro to Painting class at Massart,” she said. “I immediately fell in love with painting and decided to apply for admission to their BFA program.” Harney graduated in 2011 and began painting full-time; she currently has two studios in Boston. “It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to share my current series with a new audience,” Harney said.

The Dana Hall Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Upper School Building and is open during the school day (weekdays, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.) when school is in session.
