The Ed Techies: Student Technical Support Group

The Ed Techies are a newly formed technical support group composed of more than 70 Upper School students. The group grew out of student interest in supporting Dana Hall's iPad initiative and fostering a community of shared learning.
Department Head for Academic Technology and English Teacher Liz Paushter founded the group in the winter of 2013. Through this group Paushter hopes to create a space for students to be involved in Dana’s technology initiatives.
“It became important to me to give students the voice that they deserved,” Paushter said. “I wanted the students to become leaders in these initiatives, and I wanted to hear from them how technology impacts their learning. That is what should drive any initiative. So, here came the Student Education Technologists, or the ‘Ed Techies.’ ”

Fittingly, Paushter used technology to foster interest in the club. Using iMovie, she composed a promotion video to engage students and generate enrollment.

The Ed Techies are divided into five task forces: Teacher's Helpers, Middle School, Public Relations, Media and Research & Development. The Teacher’s Helpers Task Force provides teacher support through sharing iPad classroom techniques and applications. The Middle School Task Force encourages cross-school collaboration, while concurrently supporting and sharing best practices with Middle School students. The Public Relations Task Force promotes the iPad initiative through contests, technology-based community service and “shout outs” for creative iPad usage. The Media Task Force keeps the school community informed through online videos and tutorials. Lastly, the Research & Development Task Force researches new applications, surveys best practices and collects feedback. The Ed Techie Advisory Board oversees the task forces and provides input and leadership.

To further support the community the Ed Techies have established a “Tech Tank” located next to the "Think Tank" in the Upper School Classroom Building. This is a place for students, faculty and staff to visit and ask the Ed Techies iPad and technology-based questions. The "Tech Tank" is open during most class periods and staffed five days a week.
