Girls learning, leading, succeeding

Athletes of the Week: May 15

After a brief hiatus, Athlete of the Week has returned. There are five Dana athletes nominated as Athletes of the Week: K. Elliott ’17, A. Kiel ’17, L. Murphy ’17, and M. Palandjian ’17 and H. Rohall ’17.

Despite challenging opponents, Varsity Tennis player A. Kiel ’17 has maintained an undefeated spring season in the Eastern Independent League (EIL).

“Kiel has competed beautifully this year,” says Varsity Tennis Coach Courtney Bartlett. “She is undefeated in the EIL, defeating her Newton Country Day opponent this week, and is 5-1 so far this year. Many of her matches have been very difficult; against Concord Academy, she lost the first set in a tiebreaker, won the second set in a tiebreaker, and then won the match in a super tiebreaker. The team gathered around her and cheered her on to victory. Kiel did not drop a game against her Beaver Country Day opponent, and last week she won her match against Tabor Academy in a tiebreaker for the second set. We are all very proud of Kiel and her heart out there on the court!”

Together, Varsity Lacrosse Co-captains K. Elliott ’17, L. Murphy ’17, and M. Palandjian ’17 have united their team and utilized their collective talents on and off the field.

“Our three co-captains have been instrumental in bringing a young team together,” shares Varsity Lacrosse Coach Janet Sullivan. “Palandjian has been absolutely steadfast on defense, acting as the rock with a new, young defense learning along the way. She leads the team in blocks and has forced multiple turnovers. Elliott transitioned this season from playing defense to offense, and she has been a valuable midfield connector. She has scored 17 goals and leads in draw controls. The lead scorer on the team, Murphy, has been an incredible offensive force, leading by example and running the offense. She has netted 22 goals and had 11 assists. These three athletes will certainly be missed as they move on from Dana Hall next year!”

Dana’s softball team has an undefeated season so far this year with the help and leadership of Varsity Softball Captain H. Rohall ’17.

“Rohall has been a standout both on offense and defense,” says Varsity Softball Coach John Doll. “She has split her time between catching and playing second base. Offensively, she is leading the EIL with 14 runs batted in (RBI), and has an impressive .615 batting average. For the fourth year in a row, she leads Dana in doubles and in hit by pitch. On May 8, Rohall picked up three hits to help the team erase an 8-run Lexington Christian Academy advantage to grab a thrilling 15-14 walk-off victory. Her leadership and heads-up play have enabled Dana Hall to run its record to 3-0 in the EIL.”

The Athlete of the Week Award was established in the fall of 2015 to recognize outstanding individual performance at both the varsity and junior varsity levels in athletics. Coaches nominate athletes they feel are deserving of special recognition, and one recipient is chosen each week. A player’s nomination can be based on a multitude of factors: statistics, sportsmanship, teamwork and progress are only some of the elements taken into account.

"I love playing basketball at Dana. Our team is really like a family, and we’ve grown so much over the three years I’ve been on the team. My freshman year I never would have thought that we would be able to win the EIL league, but this past winter we did! What makes the team so great is how we look out for each other on and off the court. My teammates are my biggest supporters and it’s always great when we get to welcome new members onto the team. I can’t wait to be captain next year."
