In early September, Dana Hall alumnae Jen Lorthe ’13 and Mary Fulham ’13 traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to be part of Tokyo Jogakkan School’s (TJK) first on-campus Model UN simulation.
For months, 11th grade students in TJK’s international program prepared for the simulation by acquainting themselves with the various committees and responsibilities of the United Nations, learning formal United Nations procedures, and discussing the pros and cons of global decision-making. Dana Hall Social Studies teacher and Model UN coach Heather Panahi visited Tokyo in June, where she worked with both the faculty and students of TJK as they honed their debating and collaborative problem-solving skills. In August, 16 TJK students visited the Dana campus and met with past and present MUNers.
The TJK students’ hard work culminated in a final simulation of the United Nations, in which students—working in double delegations—sought to address the growing Syrian refugee crisis facing the world today. A few days prior to the simulation, Lorthe and Fulham, both former members of Dana Hall's nationally-ranked Model UN team, spent time in the classrooms at TJK getting to know the girls and offering their guidance and support. On Saturday, September 9, Lorthe and Fulham chaired and judged the final simulation.
TJK faculty expressed deep gratitude for the alumnae’s professionalism and leadership, and invited them back for next year’s event. Panahi said, “Jen and Mary are wonderful examples of Dana Hall’s leadership education in action, as they embody the values we hold so dear: integrity, respect, global empathy and wisdom. I couldn’t be more proud!”
