Girls learning, leading, succeeding

How is the Dana Hall Middle School different?

Dana Hall School is the only boarding and day school for girls in the Boston area. The boarding opportunity begins in 9th grade, so families frequently ask why this matters for their middle school daughter. Dana Hall Middle School students engage with and benefit from our Upper School community of boarding and day students in a variety of ways.

It starts with the sprawling campus, which is a 24/7 learning environment. Middle School students use the same science labs, library, athletic facilities, performances spaces and student center as Upper School students. They can arrive on campus as early as 7:10 a.m. and have breakfast with their classmates, and can stay as late as 6:45 for dinner, or later to use the library or gym.

Though the Middle School classroom space is self-contained, students in grades 5-8 have many opportunities to interact with girls in the Upper School. They attend a weekly All-School meeting with Middle School co-presidents sitting on the stage and making Middle School announcements. It is in these meetings where students often learn about the different cultures and customs of Dana Hall’s international students, who represent 15 countries. Girls in 5th and 6th grade have an annual playdate with the senior class, and Middle School students participate in all-school traditions like Harbor Cruise, Revels and Step Sings. Upper School students regularly visit Middle School classes to share wisdom and experiences. The juniors and seniors in Peer Education teach Forum classes in the spring, where they lead discussions on making healthy social choices.

The entire Middle School program is designed explicitly for girls, by educators who have spent their careers working with girls. That laser-focus on girls — these girls — drives the School’s mission and the daily experience of its students.

"I love playing basketball at Dana. Our team is really like a family, and we’ve grown so much over the three years I’ve been on the team. My freshman year I never would have thought that we would be able to win the EIL league, but this past winter we did! What makes the team so great is how we look out for each other on and off the court. My teammates are my biggest supporters and it’s always great when we get to welcome new members onto the team. I can’t wait to be captain next year."
